Honoring Black Leadership and Community: Reflections from the Canadian Association of Black Lawyers Conference
Dr. Charles Osuji, Giavanna Valacco and Lucy Mewanu from Osuji & Smith recently attended the Canadian Association of Black Lawyers (CABL) conference in Vancouver, a two-day event celebrating Black leadership and community. The conference emphasized the importance of fostering opportunities, mentorship, and connections within the Black community. Dr. Osuji, alongside other panelists, shared his thoughts on business development.
One of the key discussions focused on the “Black Ecosystem,” where panelists explored how Black organizations can secure funding to promote community-focused initiatives and collaboration in business and non-profit sectors.
The first day of the conference featured talks on business development and legislative updates, particularly focusing on technology and privacy laws like AIDA and Bill C-22. The second day centered on the “Black Ecosystem” and an upcoming survey on the experiences of Black lawyers in Canada, aiming to highlight the profession’s challenges and achievements.
The event concluded with a gala evening, celebrating Black excellence and paving the way for future successes.
