One of the reasons Jim went into law was the intellectual challenge and his passionate dislike of bullying and injustice, which seems to be always with us, to some degree. Jim is also aware that the law is sometimes perceived as being less useful than required, and being slow and uncertain; however, he believes that the law is the only way we know, to date, to live together in the society without violence and destruction, and it is the law that allows us to work together in our society to achieve and maintain the incredible advances that we now have and enjoy.
Jim was raised in a small town in Southern Alberta. His extensive experience before entering the practice of law has helped him in his career. After completing high school, Jim worked in Oil and Gas and construction. He attended University of Calgary and received a B. Ed degree in 1970. Jim taught school in the County of Grande Prairie, where he took his high school basketball team to the Provincial finals, and then became a principal of an elementary /Junior High School. He returned to Calgary and taught Junior High for a year before becoming one of the first class of Law Students at the then brand new University of Calgary Law School in 1976, graduating in 1979, as a member of the first graduating class of 1979.
